Picnic pancakes at the windmill

Staunton Harold Windmill
What to do this weekend?? We keep talking about getting outdoors for breakfast, we managed a breakfast BBQ the other week, but getting out early without complaints of hunger is tricky.  So last weekend we headed out with a (very heavy) frying pan and a box of pancake mix.  Along with this we took a selection of pancake toppings and some fresh fruit.  It was going to be a brunch, but by the time we got there and got sorted it was lunch, yes!!! Pancakes for lunch!!!

We decided on Staunton Harold Reservoir as our location.  It has nice views, an old windmill, picnic area, playground and lots of short walks.  There is also a cafe, but we’ve not used it before. You just need to pay to park. We chose to cook our pancakes up near the old windmill, perhaps we should have thought this through a bit more, as the day was a bit windy and we chose to sit up at the WINDMILL!! So, turns out it was a bit breezy.  The Cyclist eventually got the stove all set up and was flipping out pancakes at a steady rate.

We finished off pancakes with a big slice of watermelon, which is of course best eaten outdoors.  The boys headed off to do races around the windmill and dig in the stones.  We walked down to the playground by the time the (very heavy) frying pan had cooled down and let the boys explore for a while.

Then wound our way around the little woodland at the side of the beach.  We all stood leaning on the fence watching the masts of the sailing boats ‘clunk-clunk’, completely mesmerized. A walk through some more woodlands and we found some juicy raspberries growing in the hedgerow, the boys go mad for berries.

The last part of out walk went through the wheat field, we let the boys wander into the fields along the tractor tracks, they thought this was brilliant and would pounce out like lions :-)
